Worley Middle School teacher Maria Guastella Held was recently named Teacher of the Year.
“This is a really big achievement and we appreciate all that she has done for our students,” said principal Ira Wilson. “She is an excellent teacher who has given her all. She goes beyond the call of duty. Anything that we ask of her she does it because of the love she has for our students.”
Held, a 26-year veteran English teacher, has spent her entire career at Worley. She has served the school in many ways, including as ELA Department Chairperson, Academic Games Coach, Beta Club Sponsor, TAP Mentor Teacher, and Instructional Coach. As a member of the school leadership team, she has worked closely with administrators in preparing staff development, engaging lessons, and higher order thinking strategies for teachers to use in their classrooms.
“Teaching is a calling,” said Held. “It is a vocation and a passion. It’s within you. I come from a long line of educators in my family. What motivates me is when I see young people yearning to be taught. I am such a lover of literature and language. I just want to impart that to them.”
Held is admired by her peers and continue to be an inspiring among the faculty at Stella Worley Middle School.
